Criminal Activity Top Issue In Britain
(CPOD) Jun. 14, 2004 - A key problem is in the mind of most residents of Britain, according to a poll by YouGov published in the Daily Telegraph. 60 per cent of respondents believe crime, law and order and police are the most important issues facing the country.
According to a study by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), 66 per cent of all firms in Britain were hit by criminals in 2003, at an average cost of $14,500 U.S. Burglary and vehicle damage were the most common offences.
In April, the London Metropolitan Police said the city's crime rate had fallen by 1.8 per cent over the last 12 months. While the number of burglaries, rape offences, car-related crimes and street muggings was reduced, there was an increase in murders and violent crimes against a person.
Health care is another major issue for Britons, as 51 per cent of respondents mentioned hospitals and the National Health Service (NHS) as a problem, while 47 per cent were concerned about immigration. 31 per cent mentioned matters related to the European Union (EU), such as the continental constitution and the Euro.
