Crime, Violence Top Concerns In Russia

(CPOD) Jun. 7, 2004 - Two key issues are in the mind of most residents of Russia, according to a poll by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center. 34 per cent of respondents believe crime and violence are the main problems in the country right now.

According to the International Review of Crime Statistics, Russia has the second-highest per capita rate of prison population in the world, with 689 incarcerated persons per 100,000 inhabitants. The worldwide average rate is 87 per 100,000.

Vladimir Putin won a second four-year term as president in the Mar. 14 election, with 71.31 per cent of the vote. The pro-Kremlin United Russia (YR) currently controls 222 seats in the State Duma.

High prices and inflation, the economy and unemployment were also mentioned as key concerns by more than 22 per cent of respondents.
