Corruption a Worry for 75% of Global Citizens
- Adults in 20 countries express concerns about the incidence of illegal activity, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies for Maclean's. 75 per cent of global respondents say corruption is a big problem in their respective countries.
Mexico is first on the list of worried nations with 95 per cent, followed by India with 92 per cent, South Africa and Lebanon with 91 per cent, Turkey with 90 per cent, Italy with 89 per cent, and Russia and Israel with 88 per cent each. In South Korea, Japan, the United States and Egypt, at least four-of-five respondents expressed concerns about the prevalence of corruption.
The only countries where fewer than half of all respondents think corruption is a big problem are Canada with 46 per cent, and Australia with 41 per cent.
The 2006 Transparency International report placed Finland, Iceland, New Zealand, Denmark and Singapore as the five least corrupt nations in the world. Conversely, Haiti, Myanmar, Guinea, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo had the lowest scores and were deemed the most corrupt countries. The document gives almost 75 per cent of the 163 nations on the list a grade below 5.0 on a scale of one to ten.
