Conservatives Maintain Lead In Canada
(CPOD) Jun. 9, 2004 - The Conservative party continues to lead all political organizations in the Canadian federal election, according to a tracking poll by SES Research and CPAC. 35 per cent of respondents would vote for the Conservatives, while 31 per cent would support the ruling Liberals.
The New Democratic Party (NDP) is third with 16 per cent, followed by the Bloc Québécois with 11 per cent and the Green party with six per cent.
Canadian voters will renew the House of Commons on Jun. 28. The Liberal party achieved three straight majority governments under Jean Chrétien in 1993, 1997 and 2000. Current prime minister Paul Martin leads the ruling political organization into a federal election for the first time.
Media promotion has been a campaign topic for the past two days. Conservative leader Stephen Harper said a Liberal newspaper advertisement that suggested voting for the Bloc Québécois could give the Tories the victory amounted to "undignified and lying tactics."
Tomorrow, the NDP will unveil a series of new television spots—which will coincide with the G-8 summit in Georgia—to caution voters about the presumed dangers of close ties with the United States.
