Colombians Have Not Read Referendum
(CPOD) Jul. 17, 2003 - The 15-question plebiscite proposed by president Álvaro Uribe has been mostly ignored in Colombia, according to a poll by Invamer Gallup published in Semana. More than 90 per cent of respondents have not read the actual wording of the referendum.
A budget freeze, said to save the government 0.7 per cent of the gross domestic product in 2003 and 1.3 per cent in 2004, is included on the nationwide ballot. Other questions range from a reduction to the size of the legislative branch, to barring embezzlers from political activity.
The Colombian government also wishes to increase its military budget to fight armed groups. Respondents are split over the actual benefits the referendum might bring.
