Colombia Contemplates Re-election

July 24, 2003

(CPOD) Jul. 24, 2003 - Colombians would like to have Álvaro Uribe as president for another term, according to a poll by Opinómetro published in Cambio. 52 per cent of respondents think Uribe should be re-elected, if proper constitutional amendments are put in place.

Uribe is actively campaigning to pass a 15-question referendum this fall. A budget freeze, said to save the government 0.7 per cent of the gross domestic product in 2003 and 1.3 per cent in 2004, is included on the nationwide ballot. Other questions range from a reduction to the size of Congress, to barring embezzlers from political activity.

Many Colombians believe the current four-year term for presidents is too short. 45 per cent of respondents believe Uribe will not have enough time to develop his government program.
