Chavez Unable To Deal With Economy, Say Venezuelans

August 22, 2003

(CPOD) Aug. 22, 2003 - Venezuelans have lost confidence in their president's ability to deal with the country's financial woes, according to a poll by Datanalisis published in El Nacional. 79 per cent of respondents say Hugo Chavez will be unable to turn the economy around.

Restrictions to foreign exchange and a two-month general strike resulted in a 29 per cent contraction of the Venezuelan economy.

Chavez might face a recall election later this year. The Venezuelan constitution prevents such a measure once a president is halfway through his term. On Aug. 20, Chavez's opponents officially launched a bid to hold the referendum, and presented more than 3.2 million signatures to back their proposal. No date for the vote has been set yet.
