Chavez Support Drops In Venezuela

August 25, 2003

(CPOD) Aug. 25, 2003 - Hugo Chavez would lose a referendum on his tenure, according to a poll by Consultores 21 published in daily El Nacional. 62 per cent of respondents would vote for the president to leave office, while 33 per cent want him to stay.

Chavez might face a recall election later this year. The Venezuelan constitution prevents such a measure once a president is halfway through his term. On Aug. 20, Chavez's opponents officially launched a bid to hold the referendum, and presented more than 3.2 million signatures to back their proposal. No date for the vote has been set yet.
