Chavez Still Low In Venezuela

(CPOD) Sept. 24, 2003 - Hugo Chavez continues to lose public support in Venezuela, according to a poll by Datanalisis. 62.8 per cent of respondents disapprove of the president's performance.

According to the Venezuelan Industry Council (CVI), an estimated 1,950 businesses have gone bankrupt in the past 11 months. The country's unemployment rate reached 18.4 per cent in June; meaning 2.19 million people are out of a job.

Chavez might face a recall election later this year. Chavez's opponents officially launched a bid to hold a constitutionally-approved referendum, and presented more than 3.2 million signatures to back their proposal.

On Sept. 12, the electoral commission rejected the referendum, alleging that the signatures had been collected before Chavez was halfway through his term. If a plebiscite were held, 66.1 per cent of respondents would remove the president from office.
