Chavez Blamed Again In Venezuela
(CPOD) Aug. 12, 2003 - Citizens of Venezuela are blaming their president for the country's financial problems, according to a poll by Consultores 21 published in El Nacional. 66 per cent of respondents say Hugo Chavez is responsible for the current economic situation.
According to the Venezuelan Industry Council (CVI), an estimated 1,950 businesses have gone bankrupt in the past 10 months. The country's unemployment rate reached 18.4 per cent in June; meaning 2.19 million people are out of a job.
Chavez might face a recall election later this year. The Venezuelan constitution prevents such a measure once a president is halfway through his term. A coalition of business leaders, labor unions and opposition parties was assembled under the name Democratic Coordination to oversee the process.
