Centre-Left Parties Favoured in Sweden

June 09, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Three centre-left opposition parties are Sweden's most popular political organizations, according to a poll by Synovate Temo. 55.2 per cent of respondents would support the Workers' Party - Social-Democrats (S), the Left Party (Vp) or the Environmental Party - The Greens (MP) in the next election to the Diet.

The governing centre-right alliance of the Moderate Rally Party (M), the Centre Party (C), the People's Party Liberals (FpL), and the Christian-Democrats (KD) is second with 40.9 per cent.

Swedish voters renewed the Diet in September 2006. The centre-right alliance secured 178 seats, ending the ten-year tenure of Social-Democrat prime minister Goran Persson. Moderate leader Fredrik Reinfeldt became prime minister in October. In January 2007, former sustainable development minister Mona Sahlin took over as the new leader of the Social-Democrats.

On Jun. 5, the highest court in the European Union (EU) ruled against Sweden on a case involving the country's alcohol sales monopoly, saying Sweden was wrong to ban individuals from bringing alcohol into the country from other EU nations. The court ruled that banning imports of alcoholic beverages by private individuals bought through the internet "amounts to an unjustified (...) restriction on the free movement of goods" under EU law.

Swedish public health minister Maria Larsson said the decision would not affect the state's alcohol sales monopoly or the high taxes on imported liquor, and defended the country's restrictions on alcoholic beverages, adding, "Sweden's alcohol policies stay firm, with our goals to reach decreased alcohol consumption. (...) We will also work for restrictive alcohol policies in the EU."
