(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many adults in Canada think the Green party is well prepared to deal with the issue of climate change, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies. 34 per cent of respondents think the Greens are best suited to develop effective global warming legislation.

The Conservative party is second with 26 per cent, followed by the Liberal party with 18 per cent, the New Democratic Party (NDP) with 15 per cent, and the Bloc Québécois with three per cent.

When respondents are asked to choose between the governing Conservatives and the opposition Liberals, 34 per cent pick the Grits, while 31 per cent select the Tories. 36 per cent of respondents are undecided.

Canadians renewed the House of Commons in January 2006. The Conservative party—led by Harper—received 36.3 per cent of the vote, and secured 124 seats in the 308-member lower house. Harper leads a minority administration after more than 12 years of government by the Liberal party. In December 2006, former environment minister Stéphane Dion became the new leader of the Liberals.

In August 2006, Sierra Club of Canada head Elizabeth May became the new leader of the Greens. The party received 4.5 per cent of the national vote last year, but has no representation in the House of Commons.

The term global warming refers to an increase of the Earth's average temperature. Some theories say that climate change might be the result of human-generated carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Last month, May discussed her views on climate change, saying, "In the absence of a commitment to meet Kyoto targets, what we're getting from the Harper government is a build-up of greenhouse gases and no commitment to global responsibilities disguised in a public relations campaign to confuse Canadians."
