Canadians Sure Martin Will Be Next PM
(CPOD) Sept. 16, 2003 - Canadian voters are sure that Paul Martin will be the country's next prime minister, according to a poll by SES Research released by Sun Media Corp. 69 per cent of respondents believe the former finance minister will win the next federal election.
Prime minister Jean Chretien will retire in February 2004 after 10 years in office. The Liberal Party is set to choose his successor during a party convention on Nov. 15. Martin is heavily favored to win the race against heritage minister Sheila Copps.
Canadians believe Martin is ready for the country's top job. 49 per cent of respondents believe the Liberal politician would make the best prime minister. Canadian Alliance leader Stephen Harper is a distant second, with 10 per cent. The top representatives from the Progressive Conservative, New Democratic and Bloc Quebecois parties were in single digits.
