Canadians Still Endorse NAFTA

(CPOD) Jun. 13, 2003 - Ten years after its inception, Canadians are supportive of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), according to a poll by Ipsos-Reid released by CTV and the Globe and Mail. 70 per cent of respondents endorse Canada's participation in the deal.

Last month's Progressive Conservative convention brought free trade back into the news. Peter MacKay won the party's leadership after striking a deal with David Orchard, a long-time opponent to NAFTA. The agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico was brokered by former Tory prime minister Brian Mulroney.

More than half of all respondents say NAFTA has been beneficial for Canada, an 11 per cent increase since 2001.
