Canadians Split Over Performance of Conservatives
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Adults in Canada are divided in their assessment of the Conservative party in government, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies. 48 per cent of respondents believe the Tories have done a good job in Ottawa, while 46 per cent disagree.
In addition, 51 per cent of respondents think the Conservatives would not do a good job if they form a majority government after this year’s federal election.
Canadians renewed the House of Commons in January 2006. The Conservative party—led by Stephen Harper—received 36.3 per cent of the vote, and secured 124 seats in the 308-member lower house. Harper formed a minority administration after more than 12 years of government by the Liberal party.
On Sept. 7, Harper discussed the race, saying, "Voters can’t vote for a minority or a majority. They can’t vote 60 per cent for one party and 14 per cent for another. They have one vote. They should vote for the party that they want to lead the government."
The next federal election in Canada is scheduled for Oct. 14.
