Canadians Say Harper Best Suited for PM Job

February 24, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many adults in Canada are content with their current head of government, according to a poll by Ipsos-Reid released by CanWest Global. 46 per cent of respondents believe Conservative leader Stephen Harper makes the best prime minister.

New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jack Layton is second with 29 per cent, followed by Liberal leader Stéphane Dion with 25 per cent.

Harper is also first in four other categories: getting things done, having what it takes to lead Canada, trust, and having values that are close to those of the average Canadian. Layton is regarded as being sincerely committed to deal with global warming.

Canadians renewed the House of Commons in January 2006. The Conservative party—led by Stephen Harper—received 36.3 per cent of the vote, and secured 124 seats in the 308-member lower house. Harper leads a minority administration after more than 12 years of government by the Liberal party.

In December 2006, former environment minister Dion became the new leader of the Liberals. Layton became the NDP's leader in January 2003.

Yesterday, Layton said former United States vice-president Al Gore has tentatively accepted an invitation to talk about climate change in Ottawa, declaring, "I don't mind admitting it, I've been a Gore fan for a long, long time. He said it would be a tragedy if Canada drifted away from its Kyoto obligations. It would send a message around the world that would be very unsettling."
