Canadians Prefer Harper As “Right” Leader

(CPOD) Dec. 4, 2003 - Canadian voters have apparently decided who should be at the helm of the newly proposed Conservative Party, according to a poll by SON released by Radio Canada. 60 per cent of respondents want current Canadian Alliance leader Stephen Harper to lead the coalition.

Harper and Progressive Conservative (PC) leader Peter MacKay have proposed to join forces in a merged political organization. Only 29 per cent of respondents want MacKay to be the new party's leader.

The two right-wing parties must ratify their deal by Dec. 12. On that same date, Liberal leader Paul Martin will officially substitute Jean Chretien as Canada's prime minister.
