Canadians Assess Tory Leadership Hopefuls
(CPOD) Feb. 7, 2004 - Many Canadians remain unaware of the individuals currently running for the leadership of the Conservative Party, according to a poll by Leger Marketing. 44 per cent respondents do not know which of the three prospective candidates would be the best person to lead the political organization.
Former Canadian Alliance leader Stephen Harper and CEO of Magna International Belinda Stronach were each chosen by 18 per cent of respondents, followed by former Ontario health minister Tony Clement with eight per cent.
Liberal Party leader Paul Martin took over as prime minister on Dec. 12, 2003. Although Martin does not have to hold a federal vote until November 2005, there is growing speculation about an election call in March or April 2004.
The Conservative Party --formed after the union of the Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian Alliance-- will choose its federal leader on Mar. 20.
The Progressive Conservatives last formed the Canadian government from 1984 to 1993 under prime ministers Brian Mulroney and Kim Campbell.
