Californians Back War, San Francisco Lower

(CPOD) Apr. 8, 2003 - Support for the conflict in Iraq has grown in California, according to a poll by Field. 55 per cent of respondents in the most populous American state strongly support military action against the regime of Saddam Hussein.

San Francisco—a city that saw some of the biggest crowds during protests over a possible war—has lower numbers. 39 per cent of Bay Area residents strongly support the war, 16 per cent less than the state as a whole.

More than 2,000 anti-war demonstrators have been arrested in San Francisco over the past few weeks. Police have used rubber bullets, concussion grenades, and beanbags to break up rallies, including one in the docks of American President Lines. Protesters allege that the company benefits from the war by transporting military equipment.
