(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Almost two-thirds of people in Mexico think their head of state has partially delivered on his campaign pledges, according to a poll by Milenio. 64 per cent of respondents think Felipe Calderón has fulfilled his promises to a certain extent.

In addition, 50 per cent of respondents think Calderón has performed better than they expected, while 31 per cent think he has handled his duties in a disappointing fashion.

Mexican voters chose their new president in July 2006. Official results placed Calderón of the National Action Party (PAN) as the winner with 36.68 per cent of all cast ballots. Calderón—a former energy secretary—took over as Mexico's head of state in December.

During his campaign, Calderón vowed to combat illicit drug trafficking and drug-related crime, as well as to boost Mexico's economy. Since January, the president has placed more than 3,300 soldiers in northern areas as part of a crackdown against organized crime and illegal drug-trade operations. Calderón and United States president George W. Bush are currently discussing how to implement a strategy to combat organized crime in Mexico similar to the U.S.-led "Plan Colombia" in the South American nation.

On Aug. 17, Calderón urged members of the Mexican Congress to approve his proposed fiscal reform, which seeks to increase tax revenue for the government, saying, "Again, I invite and respectfully urge lawmakers to finish deliberations over fiscal reform. (...) Mexico does not have time to lose."
