Bush Still Leads, Lieberman Top Democrat

April 30, 2003

(CPOD) Apr. 30, 2003 - George W. Bush leads the race for the 2004 presidential election in the United States, according to a poll by Gallup released by CNN and USA Today. 49 per cent of respondents say they will vote for the current president, while 35 per cent would back the Democratic nominee.

Bush's voting intention dropped two points since late March, but support for the Democrats is also down a point. In early March—before the start of the war in Iraq—the president held a slim lead over the unnamed Democratic challenger.

Democrat supporters were also asked about their preferred nominee. 23 per cent of respondents favour Connecticut senator Joe Lieberman. Massachusetts senator John Kerry and Missouri congressman Dick Gephardt were the only other presidential hopefuls with more than 10 per cent.
