(CPOD) Nov. 25, 2004 - George W. Bush continues to regain public backing in the United States, according to a poll by Zogby International. 51 per cent of respondents approve of the president's performance, a three per cent increase in a week.

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. Earlier this month, Republican incumbent Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states.

Yesterday, Bush hosted Spain's King Juan Carlos at his Texas ranch. The president said, "Spain is a great country and a good ally."

Bilateral relations between Spain and the U.S. were temporarily strained after José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero of the Socialist Worker's Party (PSOE) became president in April and ordered the withdrawal of Spanish troops from Iraq. In 2003, then-president José María Aznar of the Popular Party (PP) was a key ally in the Iraq coalition effort.

Bush will be sworn in for his second four-year term on Jan. 20, 2005.
