Basque Terrorism Top Concern In Spain
(CPOD) Jul. 8, 2003 - Terrorist attacks are the main concern for Spaniards, according to a poll by Gallup. 62.2 per cent of respondents say incursions by armed group Basque Motherland and Liberty (ETA) are the biggest problem in the country.
Since 1959, ETA has killed more than 840 people, in the fight to form an independent state encompassing the Spanish regions of Navarra and the Basque Country, as well as areas in southwestern France. A ceasefire was accorded in 1998, but the organization resurfaced again in January 2000.
Unemployment, public safety and issues related to drug traffic and use were also important concerns for respondents.
