Australians Reflect On Death Penalty
(CPOD) Aug. 20, 2003 - A recent attack has swayed Australian views on the death penalty, according to a poll by Newspoll published in The Australian. 56 per cent of respondents support capital punishment for people guilty of terrorist acts.
A man known as Amrozi was sentenced to death by an Indonesian court for his role in the 2002 Bali bombing, where 88 Australian citizens were killed. Hambali, the suspected mastermind of the attack, was captured on Aug. 14.
The last execution in Australian soil was carried out in 1967, and capital punishment was abolished in 1985.
