(CPOD) Jan. 7, 2004 - George W. Bush would carry Arizona in the 2004 presidential election, according to a poll by Market Solutions Group published in The Arizona Republic. The current president is supported by more than 48 per cent of respondents in head-to-head contests against three prospective Democratic nominees.

Bush's largest lead is 23 per cent over Connecticut senator Joe Lieberman, while the slimmest margin is 13 per cent over former Vermont governor Howard Dean.

Arizona's eight electoral votes went to Bush in the 2000 election. The Republican candidate beat Democrat Al Gore by six per cent. Bill Clinton in 1996 is the only Democrat to have carried the state since 1972.

Today, the American president tabled his proposal for a major overhaul of the country's immigration system. The plan includes a "temporary worker program" that would grant legal status to undocumented workers.

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service estimates that 7 million illegal immigrants are currently living in the country. While California is home to most workers, Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina have the greatest rates of increase.
