Argentines Support Kirchner’s Magistrate Policy

June 16, 2003

(CPOD) Jun. 16, 2003 - Residents of Argentina stand by their president's crackdown on Supreme Court justices, according to a poll by Ricardo Rouvier y Asociados. 83.1 per cent of respondents believe some magistrates should give up their posts.

During the presidency of Carlos Menem, the number of justices in the Supreme Court was raised from five to nine. Current head of state Néstor Kirchner believes a review of the system is the first step to combat corruption, and has hinted at impeachment as a last resort. Supreme Court president Julio Nazareno, who was appointed by Menem, has stated that he will not resign.

Kirchner got 22 per cent of the vote in the first round of the presidential election on Apr. 27, but became president after Menem trailed in the polls and decided to withdraw from the run-off.
