Argentines Agree To Alliance With Brazil

(CPOD) Jun. 18, 2003 - Residents of Argentina want a closer association with Brazil, according to a poll by Equis, published in Página 12. 63.8 per cent of respondents support a strategic alliance between the two South American countries.

President Néstor Kirchner will meet today with Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Asuncion, Paraguay, during the 24th Mercosur summit.

Another important topic for Argentines is the relationship with the United States. Former president Carlos Menem was severely criticized for his alignment toward Washington throughout his 10 years in office. 73.1 per cent of respondents want Kirchner to cooperate with Washington, provided he stays away from compromising positions.
