Approval for Zapatero Drops Slightly in Spain
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero maintains positive numbers in Spain, according to a poll by Instituto Opina released by Cadena Ser. 55.5 per cent of respondents approve of their president's performance, down 1.7 points since late March.
Zapatero—of the Socialist Worker's Party (PSOE)—was sworn in as president of the government in April 2004, following his party's victory in the legislative ballot. The conservative Popular Party (PP) had administered the government under José María Aznar since 1996.
Support is lower for current PP leader Mariano Rajoy. 35 per cent of respondents approve of the opposition leader's performance, down 2.2 points.
On Apr. 24, Zapatero reviewed the first two years of his tenure, saying, "We must be swift when the left is governing, because what we do now, nobody will change. (...) The right will never again go to war against international legality, or annul same-sex marriage."
