Americans Want Focus On Iraq, Economy

January 16, 2005

(Angus Reid - CPOD Global Scan) - Many adults in the United States want George W. Bush to pay special attention to Iraq, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News. 30 per cent of respondents believe the situation in the country should be the president's top priority in his second term.

The coalition effort against Saddam Hussein's regime was launched in March 2003. At least 1,366 American soldiers have died during the military operation, and more than 10,300 troops have been injured.

Iraqi voters are set to elect a 275-member transitional National Assembly on Jan. 30. The interim legislative branch is expected to draft a constitution. A new ballot to establish a permanent government has been tentatively scheduled for December.

The economy and jobs, terrorism and security and Social Security were next on the list of concerns, followed by health care and education. Bush will be sworn in for his second four-year term on Jan. 20.
