Americans Reject Same-Sex Marriage

Abstract: (CPOD) Dec. 25, 2003 - Many Americans do not want their constitution to accommodate same-sex couples, according to a poll by CBS News and the New York Times. 55 per cent of respondents support an amendment to define marriage as the union between a man and a woman.

(CPOD) Dec. 25, 2003 - Many Americans do not want their constitution to accommodate same-sex couples, according to a poll by CBS News and the New York Times. 55 per cent of respondents support an amendment to define marriage as the union between a man and a woman.

Last month, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that the state's constitution must offer same-sex couples the possibility of getting married.

The U.S. Supreme Court overturned Texas' sodomy law earlier this year, in what was considered a major victory for gay rights advocates. President George W. Bush acknowledged in July that his administration intends to limit marriage to heterosexuals.
