Americans Favour Higher Taxes For Security
(CPOD) Apr. 23, 2003 - Americans choose homeland security as the final destination of any new taxes, according to a poll by Insight Express. 56 per cent of respondents say they would pay more in order to avoid terrorist attacks inside the country. Only 14 per cent support raised contributions to rebuild Iraq.
Support for other issues sways according to party allegiance. Almost half of Republican respondents would pay higher taxes to support the current conflict in the Persian Gulf, but only 19 per cent of Democrats concur.
President George W. Bush signed a 10-year $1.35 trillion U.S. tax cut in 2001. The U.S. Congress is currently debating additional relief, believed to be around $350 billion.
