A Third of U.S. Republicans Want Giuliani in 2008

Abstract: (Angus Reid Global Scan) - Many GOP supporters in the United States would like former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani to launch a White House bid in 2008, according to a poll by Gallup released by CNN and USA Today. 33 per cent of respondents would support Giuliani in a primary election.

(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Many GOP supporters in the United States would like former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani to launch a White House bid in 2008, according to a poll by Gallup released by CNN and USA Today. 33 per cent of respondents would support Giuliani in a primary election.

Arizona senator John McCain is second with 28 per cent, followed by Virginia senator George Allen with seven per cent, Tennessee senator Bill Frist with six per cent, Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with three per cent, and Kansas senator Sam Brownback and U.S. state secretary Condoleezza Rice with one per cent each.

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
