Three-Way Talks Backed in Gibraltar

November 25, 2005

(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Many adults in Gibraltar are in favour of the dialogue forum established between their government, Britain and Spain, according to a poll by GBC. 58 per cent of respondents support the three-way talks.

In 1704, Britain captured Gibraltar from Spain. The area—encompassing 6.5 square kilometres in the southern tip of Andalusia—was ceded in the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht. The territory officially became a British colony in 1830, and houses a naval air base, which proved critical for allied forces in both world wars. To this day, Spain claims sovereignty over Gibraltar.

In December 2004, the yearly dialogue forum was instituted. The talks have so far revolved around issues such as the use of Gibraltar's airport, joint projects, and cooperation between Gibraltar and the Spanish port of Algeciras.
