Doyle’s Approval Still Below 50% in Wisconsin
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Adults in the Badger State are divided over the performance of Jim Doyle, according to a poll by Strategic Vision. 47 per cent of respondents in Wisconsin approve of the governor's performance, while 44 per cent disapprove.
Doyle—a Democrat—has acted as Wisconsin's governor since January 2003. The former state attorney general defeated Republican incumbent Scott McCallum and Libertarian candidate Ed Thompson in the November 2002 election with 45 per cent of the vote.
On Nov. 16, Republican state legislators—who hold a majority in Wisconsin—presented a package of incentives for economic development, which includes a proposal to eliminate the capital gains tax. 58 per cent of respondents believe Wisconsin is headed in the wrong direction, unchanged since October.
The next gubernatorial election is scheduled for November 2006. United States congressman Mark Green and Milwaukee County executive Scott Walker are actively contending for the Republican nomination.
