Flores Nano Leads Nationally in Peru

October 18, 2005

(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Lourdes Flores Nano is the top presidential contender for Peruvian voters, according to a nationwide poll by Apoyo published in El Comercio. 27 per cent of respondents would support the Popular Christian Party (PPC) candidate in next year's ballot.

Former president Alan García of the American Revolutionary People's Alliance (APRA) is second with 17 per cent, followed by former head of state Valentín Paniagua of Popular Action (AP) with 15 per cent, and Ollanta Humala of the Etnocacerista Movement (ME) with eight per cent.

Support is lower for vice-president David Waisman of Possible Peru (PP), Alberto Andrade of We Are Peru (SP), Javier Díez Canseco of the Decentralizing Democratic Party (PDD), Jaime Salinas of National Justice (JN) and Luisa María Cuculiza of the "Sí Cumple" (Yes, he keeps his promises) party.

Former president Alberto Fujimori is currently living in Japan. Fujimori administered the Peruvian government from 1990 to 2000, but cannot seek office until 2010 because of a congressional decision. Earlier this month, Fujimori announced his intention to run for president under the "Sí Cumple" banner, declaring, "Support for my candidacy is high, and therefore, I am prepared to mount a legal strategy that will enable me to participate in the next election."

In two prospective run-off scenarios, Flores Nano holds a 29-point lead over García, and a six-point advantage over Paniagua. In a duel of former presidents, Paniagua holds a 30-point advantage over García.

Current president Alejandro Toledo won the June 2001 election as the PP nominee over the APRA's García. Toledo cannot seek a consecutive term in office. The election is scheduled for Apr. 6, 2006.
