Paraguay’s Duarte OK, But Financial Worries Persist

August 16, 2005

(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Adults in Paraguay are satisfied with Nicanor Duarte, according to a poll by Instituto de Comunicación y Arte. 48 per cent of respondents rate the president's performance as good, while 40.8 per cent deem it average.

Duarte—a member of the National Republican Association - Red Party (ANR)—won the April 2003 presidential election with 37.1 per cent of all cast ballots. The ANR has been involved in Paraguay's government since 1947, even during the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner. State workers and employees make up 40 per cent of Paraguay's voting population.

In an interview published yesterday in Diario ABC Color, Duarte asked for patience, saying, "The recession has been too long—too many years—and poverty has increased during the transition. I ask the people to understand that it is not easy to lift a country that has been practically dead in just two years, What we are experiencing is an almost pathological pessimism in several sectors." 50.9 per cent of respondents say the economic situation has stayed the same since Duarte came to power.
