Flores Nano is Top Candidate in Peru
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Lourdes Flores Nano continues to lead all presidential hopefuls in Peru, according to a poll by CPI. 18.4 per cent of respondents in Metropolitan Lima would support the Popular Christian Party (PPC) member in next year's election.
Former president Alan García of the American Revolutionary People's Alliance (APRA) is second with 14.9 per cent, followed by former head of state Valentín Paniagua of Popular Action (AP) with 10.6 per cent. The eventual nominee of Alberto Fujimori's "Sí Cumple" (Yes, he keeps his promises) party would get 10.5 per cent.
Support is lower for Alberto Andrade of We Are Peru (SP), Jaime Salinas of National Justice (JN), Antauro Humala or his brother Ollanta Humala of the Etnocacerista Movement (ME), Ricardo Wong of Its Name is Peru (YSLP), Marco Antonio Arrunátegui of Project Country, and the eventual nominee of Possible Peru (PP).
In two prospective run-off scenarios, Flores Nano defeats García by 25 per cent and Paniagua by 6.9 per cent. In a duel of former presidents, Paniagua leads García by 29.5 per cent.
Former president Fujimori—who is currently living in Japan—has expressed interest in becoming a candidate once again. Fujimori administered the government from 1990 to 2000, but cannot seek office until 2010 because of a congressional decision. Current Lima mayor Luis Castañeda has ruled out a presidential bid.
The next general election is scheduled for Apr. 6, 2006. Current head of state Alejandro Toledo of the PP cannot seek a consecutive term in office.
