Mexico’s PRD Faithful Prefer López Obrador
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Current Mexico City mayor Andrés Manuel López Obrador remains the favourite politician for supporters of Mexico's Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), according to a poll by Reforma. 90 per cent of respondents want López Obrador to become the presidential nominee in the next election.
The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) ruled Mexico for 71 consecutive years, losing its first presidential election in 2000 with candidate Francisco Labastida. Vicente Fox of the National Action Party (PAN) won a six-year term with 42.5 per cent of the vote.
Former Mexico City mayor and three-time presidential candidate Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas is a distant second with eight per cent.
In April, the Chamber of Deputies removed López Obrador's immunity in a 360-127 vote. López Obrador was expected to face a federal judicial process on a charge of abuse of authority, stemming from the construction of roads in a lot expropriated by the Mexico City government in 2000. On Apr. 27, Fox announced the resignation of attorney general Rafael Macedo de la Concha, adding, "My government will impede no person from participating in the next election." In May, all criminal charges against López Obrador were dropped.
The Mexican presidential election is scheduled for Jul. 2, 2006.
