Flores Nano Leads Peru’s Presidential Hopefuls
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Lourdes Flores Nano is the top presidential candidate in Peru, according to a poll by Datum Internacional. 23 per cent of respondents would vote for Flores Nano of the Popular Christian Party (PPC) in next year's election.
Former head of state Valentín Paniagua of the Popular Action (AP) party is second with 20 per cent, followed by former president Alan García of the American Revolutionary People's Alliance (APRA) with 19 per cent, Alberto Andrade of We Are Peru (SP) with six per cent and Callao mayor Alex Kouri with five per cent.
Former president Alberto Fujimori—who is currently living in Japan—has expressed interest in becoming a candidate once again. Fujimori administered the government from 1990 to 2000, but cannot seek office until 2010 because of a congressional decision.
In July 2003, the Peruvian government issued a formal extradition request for Fujimori, on charges that include murder, kidnapping and misuse of public funds. The government of Japan has refused to expel the former Peruvian head of state, who is deemed a Japanese citizen.
Current Lima mayor Luis Castañeda ruled out a presidential bid. The election is tentatively scheduled for April 2006.
