Lula Would Defeat Challengers Next Year

March 26, 2005

(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva could earn a new term as president, according to a poll by Ibope. At least 39 per cent of respondents would vote for the current president in three potential scenarios.

Lula—a three-time presidential candidate for the Worker's Party (PT)—won the October 2002 election with 61 per cent of the vote in a run-off against Jose Serra of the Brazilian Party of Social Democracy (PSDB). In the first round, Lula received 47 per cent of the vote, while Serra garnered 24 per cent.

In the first list of possible contenders, 39 per cent of respondents chose Lula, 27 per cent selected Serra and eight per cent picked Cesar Maia of the Party of the Liberal Front (PFL). In a second list, Lula led prospective PSDB candidate Geraldo Ackim, Maia and Anthony Garotinho of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) by 30 per cent. In a third list, Maia finished in second place, 30 points behind the current president, followed by Garotinho and the PSDB's Aecio Neves.

The next presidential election is tentatively scheduled for October 2006.
