López Obrador Retakes Lead In Mexico

March 09, 2005

(Angus Reid Consultants - CPOD Global Scan) - Mexico City mayor Andrés Manuel López Obrador leads all presidential hopefuls in the Latin American country, according to a poll by El Universal. 35 per cent of respondents would vote for López Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) in next year's election.

Former Tabasco governor Roberto Madrazo of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) is second with 27 per cent, followed by current interior secretary Santiago Creel of the National Action Party (PAN) with 26 per cent. Mexico's three main political organizations have not settled on actual nominees yet.

The PRI ruled Mexico for 71 consecutive years, losing its first presidential election in 2000. The PAN's Vicente Fox won a six-year term with 42.5 per cent of the vote.

López Obrador is expected to face a federal judicial process on a charge of abuse of authority, stemming from the construction of roads in a lot expropriated by the Mexico City government in 2000. The mayor maintains that the accusations are part of a "plot" to prevent him from winning the next presidential ballot, a charge Fox denies.

Yesterday, Fox ruled out a "political solution" to the charge against López Obrador, saying, "The president cannot be asked to breach existing laws—it seems inadequate to me." The Mexican presidential election is scheduled for Jul. 2, 2006.
