Gay School Teachers Dangerous for Peruvians

August 30, 2009

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Most people in Peru believe that allowing homosexual teachers to work in schools presents a danger to children, according to a poll by Ipsos, Apoyo, Opinión y Mercado published in El Comercio. 61 per cent of respondents share this point of view, while 31 per cent disagree.

Homosexuality is not a crime under Peruvian law. Same-sex marriage is not legal in the country.

Last October, openly-gay Peruvian writer and entertainer Jaime Bayly suggested that he could run for the highest office in the next election, saying, "I will be the first homosexual Peruvian president."

Peruvian voters will elect a president and renew their Congress on Apr. 10, 2011.
