Swedish Opposition Maintains Upper Hand
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - People in Sweden are inclined to support the opposition alliance of centre-left parties, according to a poll by Novus Opinion published in Svenska Dagbladet. 49.5 per cent of respondents would vote for the Workers’ Party - Social-Democrats (S), the Environmental Party - The Greens (MP), or the Left Party (Vp) in the next election, down two points since November.
The ruling coalition of centre-right parties—featuring the Moderate Rally Party (M), the People’s Party Liberals (FpL), the Centre Party (C) and the Christian-Democrats (KD)—is second with 42.1 per cent. Two other parties are below the threshold to secure seats in the legislature. The far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) are at 2.8 per cent, followed by the Pirate Party (P) with 2.4 per cent.
Swedish voters renewed the Diet in September 2006. The centre-right alliance secured 178 seats, ending the ten-year tenure of Social-Democrat prime minister Goran Persson. Moderate leader Fredrik Reinfeldt became prime minister in October 2006. In January 2007, former sustainable development minister Mona Sahlin took over as the new leader of the Social-Democrats.
Last month, the Pirate Party won one seat in the European Parliament. The party advocates for reduced copyright protection and allowing non-commercial file-sharing. It has also voiced criticism against the Lisbon treaty, a proposed new body of law for all European Union (EU) members.
On Jun. 26, Christian Engstrom, the Pirate Party’s only European member of Parliament, said that he will support the Greens in the legislature, declaring, "We’re joining The Greens because we feel it’s the best way for us to fight our cause." A statement by the Greens said that the party is "delighted to welcome the Swedish Pirate Party, which shares our principles and values in defending Internet users’ rights."
The next general election in Sweden is scheduled for Sept. 19, 2010.
