More French Expressing Trust in Sarkozy
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Although the majority of people in France remain sceptical of the president’s ability to face the country’s problems, more people now express confidence in Nicolas Sarkozy, according to a poll by TNS-Sofres published in Le Figaro Magazine. 41 per cent of respondents trust the president’s leadership, up nine points since May.
In May 2007, Sarkozy, candidate for the centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and former interior minister, won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed François Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister. 44 per cent of respondents say they have confidence in Fillon, up eight points in a month.
Earlier this month, Fillon referred to the recent European elections, saying, "Those who talked about Europe, those who put forward constructive or alternative proposals, have been rewarded. This was particularly the case for ‘Europe-Ecologie’ [the Greens], whose breakthrough confirms the growing importance of the environment. I say to the majority that they can be proud of this result. It recognizes the work accomplished by the French European Union presidency."
