Susilo’s Party Most Popular in Indonesia
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Indonesia’s ruling Democrat Party (PD) begins this election year as the most popular political organization in the country, according to a poll by the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI). 23 per cent of respondents would vote for the PD in April’s legislative ballot, up 6.2 points since November.
The Struggling Indonesian Democratic Party (PDIP) is second with 17.1 per cent, followed by the Party of Functional Groups (Golkar) with 13.3 per cent, the National Awakening Party (PKB) with 4.8 per cent, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) with four per cent, the Greater Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) with 3.9 per cent, the National Mandate Party (PAN) with 3.4 per cent, the United Development Party (PPP) with 3.1 per cent, and the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura) with 1.3 per cent.
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono—a security minister who ran as the PD candidate—won the September 2004 presidential election with 60.62 per cent of the vote in a run-off over incumbent Megawati Sukarnoputri of the PDIP. The vote marked the first time Indonesian voters picked their head of state through the ballot box. Susilo is running for re-election in this year’s presidential ballot.
General Wiranto—a former military commander indicted by the United Nations (UN) for war crimes committed in the late 1990s—founded Hanura in 2006. Wiranto ran for president unsuccessfully in 2004, and has said he will run again.
For the legislative ballot, the PD has assembled a coalition with Golkar. On Jan. 5, PD chairman Anas Urbaningrum said both parties were committed to backing the government of Susilo and current vice-president Jusuf Kalla—a member of Golkar—declaring, "Whether or not we will continue the coalition will be decided after the legislative elections."
The legislative election will take place on Apr. 9. The next presidential election is tentatively scheduled for July 2009.
