Ruling Smer Keeps Upper Hand in Slovakia
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The governing Direction-Social Democracy (Smer) party remains ahead in Slovakia, according to a poll by UVVM. 46.3 per cent of respondents would support Smer in the next legislative ballot, up 1.5 points since October.
The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKU) is second with 13.7 per cent, followed by the Slovak National Party (SNS) with 10.7 per cent, the People’s Party - Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (LS-HZDS) with 8.7 per cent, the Party of the Hungarian Coalition (SMK) with eight per cent, and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) with 6.6 per cent. Support is lower for the Movement for Democracy (HZD), the Slovak Communist Party (KSS), the Free Forum (SF), and the New Civic Alliance (ANO).
Slovak voters renewed their legislative branch in June 2006. Final results placed Smer—led by Fico—as the top party in the European country with 50 seats. In July, Fico officially took over as prime minister, in a coalition encompassing Smer, the SNS and the LS-HZDS.
On Nov. 17, Fico expressed satisfaction with his tenure, saying, "Today we want to point to the [infrastructure] projects that are of immense interest for us. If anybody wants to compete in any commemoration activities, I won’t take part in such a competition."
