Norway’s Labour Steady at the Top

October 13, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Public support for the governing Labour Party (DNA) has dropped only slightly since last year, according to a poll by Sentio published in Bergens Tidende. 30.5 per cent of respondents would vote for Labour in the next federal election, down 2.9 points since last November.

The Progress Party (FrP) is second with 28.3 per cent, followed by the Conservatives (H) with 15.9 per cent, the Socialist Left (SV) with 7.4 per cent, the Agrarians (Sp) with 5.4 per cent, the Christian People (KrF) with 5.3 per cent, and the Liberal Left (V) with 4.6 per cent.

In September 2005, Norwegian voters renewed the Stortinget (the Norwegian Parliament). Final results gave the Red-Green alliance—encompassing Labour, the Socialist Left and the Agrarians—87 seats in the 169-member legislative branch. Labour leader Jens Stoltenberg—who held the highest office from March 2000 to October 2001—took over as prime minister for the second time.

In this survey, the level of support for the governing parties stands at 43.3 per cent, while the two main opposition forces—Progress and the Conservatives—reach 44.2 per cent.

On Oct. 10, Labour lawmaker Saera Khan resigned after it was revealed that she spent taxpayers’ money in seeking advice from fortune tellers through pay-by-the-minute phone services. A newspaper reported that Khan’s cell-phone bills reached more than $7,700 U.S. in a three-month period. The lawmaker eventually confessed that she "regretted" calling the services 793 times over a period of nine months, and assured that she had paid back the amount.

The next legislative election is expected to take place in September 2009.
