(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The Conservative party has kept its advantage in Canada, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies. 37 per cent of respondents would vote for the governing Tories in tomorrow’s legislative ballot.

The Liberal party is second with 27 per cent, followed by the New Democratic Party (NDP) with 20 per cent, the Bloc Québécois with nine per cent, and the Green party with seven per cent.

Canadians renewed the House of Commons in January 2006. The Conservative party—led by Stephen Harper—received 36.3 per cent of the vote, and secured 124 seats in the 308-member lower house. Harper formed a minority administration after more than 12 years of government by the Liberal party. In December 2006, former environment minister Stéphane Dion became the new leader of the Liberals.

On Oct. 11, Dion urged voters to support his party, saying, "The important thing for us, at the fourth year of our plan we have child care, we have more doctors and nurses, we have everything. So the pace at which we deliver our plan may be changed because of the economic difficulties and because of the fact that Mr. Harper did nothing to prepare the country to the turmoil in which we are."

The next federal election in Canada is scheduled for Oct. 14.
