President Sarkozy Improves in France

October 11, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - More French adults are satisfied with Nicolas Sarkozy, according to a poll by CSA published in Le Parisien. 49 per cent of respondents have confidence in their president to face the country’s problems, up eight points in a month.

In May 2007, Sarkozy, candidate for the centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and former interior minister, won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed François Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister. 43 per cent of respondents have confidence in Fillon, down one point since September.

Yesterday, Sarkozy discussed his views on the global financial crisis, saying, "We have prepared a certain number of decisions that we will submit to our partners in the presence of the president of the European Commission and the governor of the (European) central bank. (...) We know where we want to get to and how we want to get there, but first we want to coordinate between the euro zone countries and then all of Europe."
