Canadians Still Divided Over Tory Government
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Adults in Canada remain split in their assessment of the way the Conservative party performed in Ottawa, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies. 49 per cent of respondents believe the Tories have done a good job as the federal government.
In addition, 40 per cent of respondents think the Conservatives would do a good job if they form a majority government after this month’s federal election.
Canadians renewed the House of Commons in January 2006. The Conservative party—led by Stephen Harper—received 36.3 per cent of the vote, and secured 124 seats in the 308-member lower house. Harper formed a minority administration after more than 12 years of government by the Liberal party.
On Sept. 22, Canadian finance minister Jim Flaherty discussed the country’s finances within the context of the current crisis in the United States, saying, "We do not see that type of risk with Canadian financial institutions. These are not new issues. They’re unfolding more dramatically of late, but they’re not new. (...) There are some indications that there will be some activity outside the United States that would be cooperative with what the United States has done."
The next federal election in Canada is scheduled for Oct. 14.
